From the Dogwood Tree to Me
the holy trinity of communication
The Moment, The Miracle
As I communed with a Dogwood tree in one of the many valleys of the Smoky Mountains, I heard this:
Nothing in creation thrives without right communication. Right not meaning correct, but integral, essential and effective. Right communication is wholly nutritive.
How I speak to the soil differs from I respond to the wind. And how I commune with the sun is different than how I now whisper to you.
To the wind I deepen my roots to account for its tension. Saying nothing, my enduring presence speaks in my stead. For my resilience, the wind loves to take credit; and I love to let it.
To the soil I am a bit more chatty—our conversations flowing seamlessly from root tip to its belly in an agreed-upon exchange of resources. I put my orders in liberally, and deliver on my promises.
To the sun, I offer evidence of its power in my growth and bloom, transmuting its light into food as a token of gratitude.
And to you, dear daughter, I reflect a beauty, potent enough to rearrange your morning agenda, and maybe even your life.
No two communications are the same, and yet all are integral … essential … effective.
Remember…
to be integral one must factor in the intelligence of all one’s parts, for all parts, no matter how unbecoming, bear a wisdom.
To be essential, give and receive only what is needed in that most immediate moment. Trust the bounty and kindness of Time.
To be effective, listen twice as much as you respond. This will help you harmonize with all the chords of life without shrinking from any pitch.
Then your communication will be as clear as the mountain creek, a fluid communion within that fertilizes the community all around you. And you, too, will birth the kind of beauty you think you can only see in me that also lives in you.
